2022 Landlord and Renter Tax Credit Claims – Conduit Street

The Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT) today announced that applications for the 2022 Homeowner and Renter Tax Credit Programs are available online.

The Property Tax Credit for Homeowners program provides tax relief to eligible homeowners by setting a limit on the amount of property taxes owed based on their income. Applications received and approved by May 1 are included in the initial July tax bill. Eligible residents who have already paid their property taxes and submitted an application by Oct. 1 can expect a refund from their county finance office. In fiscal year 2021, 42,272 eligible homeowners received an average of $1,451 in tax relief.

The Tenant Property Tax Credit Program also provides tax relief to eligible tenants who pay a high monthly rent relative to their total income. The majority of recipients of this credit are Marylanders age 60 or older. The program is also accessible to people with 100% disabilities and tenants under 60 with at least one dependent child. This credit has a maximum value of $1,000. In FY21, 7,525 eligible tenants received an average of $446 in tax relief.

All Marylanders who received a homeowner’s or renter’s tax credit in 2021 will have a free application for 2022 mailed to their home address. Homeowners may also be eligible to receive a homestead tax credit to limit increases in the taxable assessment of their principal residence. To determine their eligibility, homeowners can complete a one-time online application, which can be completed year-round.

Many counties and municipalities also offer additional residential tax credits. If a resident is eligible to receive the state homeowners credit, they may automatically receive the additional local homeowners credits for which they are eligible.
