Allumine Home Health & Hospice is looking for volunteers
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – If you’re looking for a way to spend your extra time giving back to people in the community, Home health and hospice of Allumine officials say they would like your help.
Volunteer coordinator Lauren Saunders says they have recently seen an increase in the number of patients, so they need more volunteers.
âWe make it a smoother, rounder, and much more enjoyable end-of-life experience,â Saunders said.
Saunders says volunteers help in all kinds of ways, from interacting directly with patients undergoing end-of-life care to working in the office answering phones and doing paperwork.
Bryan resident Robin Olson says she started volunteering after seeing how her parents were being treated while in hospice care.
âIt is truly a privilege to be with the people and their families during this time,â said Olson. âI also say families because they need support as much as the patient going through the end-of-life care process. “
When it comes to volunteers, Saunders says they’re looking for all types. The only requirement is to be 18 years of age or older.
âWe need people to bake birthday cakes, to do the gardening and maintenance work,â Saunders said. âWe have volunteers who sing and play guitar, and I put them in retirement homes and let everyone benefit from their talents. “
Saunders says sharing your talents and passions, or even just sitting down and talking to a patient, can mean the world to them in their dying days.
âThis is real service that we need, and so far we have been very successful with our volunteers,â Saunders said.
