Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma is looking for more volunteers

TULSA, Okla. — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma is always looking for volunteers.

The “big ones”, as the organization calls them, act as a kind of mentor for their “little ones” and spend time with them every month.

“You need a big person who can watch over you and take care of you,” Prince Quadree said.

Quadree and Big Brother Diogo Palhano paired up through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma six months ago. The organization matches adult and child volunteers to develop positive relationships.

You might think it takes a long time, but Palhano disagrees.

“It’s not a huge time commitment,” Palhano said. “That’s really not the case.”

He said it was more about consistency.

“You have to be patient, it’s true, and it’s over time, it’s slowly,” Palhano said. “At the same time, you don’t need to, you know, spend the whole weekend together. It doesn’t have to be super long.

Saying everything comes down to one thing.

“It’s about building that relationship,” Palhano said.

And building that relationship doesn’t require anything elaborate.

“You might even like going to the supermarket,” Palhano said. “You go there if you need to get groceries, and they’ve been hanging out, you know.”

He could also be heading to a FC Tulsa practice at OneOK Field. Diogo is a season ticket holder and takes Prince for VIP treatment. Football is one of Prince’s favorite things, and he’s quite a superstar fan.

“If you miss. Ronaldo is the best!” said Quadrée.

“Prince loves football and he made friends there,” Palhano said. “A great way to build that relationship is to sort of date, you know, one thing that we do together, and I think for us, that’s football games.”

Palhano said they usually grab a burger near the stadium before heading inside.

“He’s always following what’s going on with the team and new players and all that,” Palhano said.
