Comcast RISE Former Grantee
SOUTH FLORIDA – Jackie Michel, owner/designer of naked reverie is a past recipient of the Comcast RISE Grant program.
Jackie Michel’s Journey
I grew up parenting a structured accountant for a father and a carefree babysitter for a mother, a fusion of Haitian parents and Parisian culture, and later became a full-fledged Miami girl. I was a child artist, but I was also organized, studious and entrepreneurial. After realizing that I didn’t want to be a gynecologist in college (long story), a free period in seventh gave me the opportunity to pursue different career opportunities in the arts. This is where my love for fashion was born.
Apart from learning to sew a button at age eight, my first real sewing experience was at eighteen in design school. I remember countless hours spent in the lab with a few friends as we stayed up all night in our pajamas, dancing to music, stitching our fingers together, and steaming our clothes for too long.
To graduate and graduate, students had to complete a semester-long internship. I sent my CV and some collections created during my time at school to some of my favorite designers whose collections I followed on ‘nymag’ and ‘style.com.’
Then, I accepted a Production internship at Cushnie et Ochs. I learned under the wings of two beautiful, young, knowledgeable women for three seasons who had built their business right out of college. It was one of the most inspiring moments of my life. I ended up living in New York for a year and did some additional design and technical design apprenticeships with Tommy Hilfiger, Peter Som and Jen Kao while working full time.
After leaving New York, I worked at several companies in South Florida as a technical designer and found great joy in this field. In this role, I worked with all departments of the company, leading me here…
Today, I manage technical and design projects for local businesses and have launched my line of what I like to call comfortable, feminine and cool underwear. My goal is to create a sustainable business in all areas.
I’m married to my amazing husband (and high school sweetheart). We live and play together in sunny (and rainy) Miami.
I am overwhelmed every day by how God has shaped my life into what it is today. I look forward to the rest to come. Hope you stick around for the ride!
