EPA’s Responsible Appliance Disposal Program Honors 12 Partners for Appliance Recycling Achievements

WASHINGTON — This month, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it has recognized 12 partners in the Responsible Appliance Disposal (RAD) program for their outstanding achievements in appliance recycling. The accolades were announced as EPA marks the 16th year of operation of the program and the third annual RAD Leadership Awards Ceremony, which was hosted virtually as part of the annual RAD Partners Meeting.

“RAD partners always inspire us to aim higher through their achievements in recycling devices that protect the ozone layer, fight climate change and reduce unnecessary landfills, while supporting healthy communities” , said Joe Goffman, Deputy Principal Assistant Administrator of the Bureau of Air and Radiation. “It is a privilege to celebrate the recipients of the 2022 RAD Leadership Award. These partners lead by example, demonstrate dynamic innovation and collaboration, and display the highest standards and levels of treatment in safe disposal of devices.”

For 16 years, EPA’s RAD program partners have used environmental best practices to collect and dispose of old refrigerated appliances such as refrigerators and freezers, window air conditioners, and dehumidifiers. By committing to recover foam insulation from appliances, RAD Partners is taking an admirable step beyond simply complying with federal laws on the recovery of refrigerants, waste oil, mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). RAD partners are leaders in promoting the recycling of durable goods and in promoting the permanent removal of old and inefficient refrigerators from our energy grids. Since RAD’s inception in 2006, the dedication of RAD’s partners has produced significant environmental benefits: recycling more than 9.4 million refrigerated appliances and reducing ozone-depleting substance emissions by 1,996 weighted tons in DTP.

RAD Leadership Award winners were honored in three categories: the RAD Champion Award, the RAD Program Growth Award, and the RAD Ambassador Award.

  • The RAD Champion Award recognizes RAD partners with the highest recovery rates of foam insulation in refrigerated appliances. The ten recipients of the award this year are General Electric Appliances (Louisville, Ky.), Turlock Irrigation District (Turlock, CA), Palo Alto Utilities (Palo Alto, CA), Silicon Valley Power (Santa Clara, CA), Modesto Irrigation District (Modesto, CA), City of Burbank (Burbank, CA), Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (Los Angeles, CA), Sacramento Municipal Utility District (Sacramento, CA), Georgia Power (Atlanta, GA), Power New Mexico (Albuquerque, NM).
  • The RAD Program Growth Awards recognizes the top three RAD Partners with the highest annual percentage increase in refrigerated appliance units processed. This year’s winners are Delmarva Power (Washington, DC), Georgia Power (Atlanta, Ga.), City of Burbank (Burbank, CA).
  • The RAD Ambassador Award was featured at Exquisite Property Services (EPS) (Newark, NJ), which demonstrated exemplary partner practices and promoted sustainability at every turn. EPS is a leader of the RAD Network and its community, initiating key engagement with the RAD team that has elevated environmental justice and resonant communication about the benefits of RAD to communities, fostering relationships with new RAD partners, and catalyzing a new device recycling partnership model with local collaborators. , which allows EPS and any like-minded Newark community organization to recycle units in accordance with RAD best practices.
