Samsung South Africa hosted a dynamic and insightful student interaction day in Johannesburg

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – March 08, 2022 – On Saturday, February 26, Samsung hosted an innovation-packed Student Interaction Day for its Empowering Tomorrow Scholarship recipients at the Design Quarter in Johannesburg. The 54 students, who have already started their classes on weekdays, were invited to participate in a day designed for them to interact with the Samsung team and benefit from an insider’s point of view on the technology that inspires a new generation of pioneers. Samsung’s multi-million rand scholarship program continues to support many learners across the country in their continued quest to develop skilled professionals – who can become a valuable part of the South African economy.

“It was extremely gratifying to welcome and interact with these talented students. As very deserving recipients of our Empowering Tomorrow scholarship program, we wanted to make sure they feel welcome in the Samsung family. Samsung’s product managers, from mobile devices to home appliances, shared valuable insights into our approach to product design, local research and development, and our commitment to sustainable solutions for a better future. By reaching out to students, we in turn received insightful insights into their unique thinking and perspectives on how technology can improve the lives of people in their own communities,” said Hlubi Shivanda, Director: Business Innovation Group and Corporate Affairs at Samsung South Africa.

Samsung works with CareerWise, the scholarship management company that finds, selects and shortlists financially deserving students from universities in South Africa who are academically strong. This year, Samsung has allocated nearly R8 million to the initiative, building on its ongoing multimillion-Rand annual investment since 2018. Once scholarship students are selected, Samsung pledges to provide financial support through to completion at the specialist level. It is for this reason that the company aims to establish a lasting relationship with the students, the most talented of whom will compete to join the Samsung South Africa team themselves.

Dimakatso Moagi, a law student at North West University, commenting on the Empowering Tomorrow Scholarship said, “I am very happy and grateful for the opportunity provided by Samsung. It came at a time when I needed it the most. I now have confidence that the hard work really pays off.

Kashveer Sewjalal, who is completing a bachelor’s degree in information management at the University of Johannesburg, expressed his sense of gratitude and renewed purpose: “I feel truly blessed to have Samsung on my journey towards achieving my dreams. , and I’m honored to be recognized as a young achiever. Their support motivates me to do my best in all aspects of my life.

South African youth face a multitude of socio-economic challenges such as; high unemployment rates, poverty and lack of access to basic services, to name a few. Many students in the Samsung Empowering Tomorrow Scholarship Program come from homes where both parents are unemployed and families where they are the first or only person given the opportunity to go to college. Many are those who are entitled to it and who do not have the financial means to complete their studies. This is where Samsung stepped in and pledged to support them until the end of their tertiary career.

“It is through this level of support that the youth of our country can be a major driver of immense transformational change in the South African economy,” Shivanda concluded.
