The Japan Art Association has just announced the founders of SANAA, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, winners of the Architecture 2022 category of the coveted annual Praemium Imperiale Awardnow in its 33rd year.

The 2010 Pritzker Prize winners were joined by winners in other categories, including Italian Arte Povera painter Giulio Paolini, Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei and architecturally inspired artists. Alice in the cities director Wim Wenders.

Their three-decade-long work has been praised for its “light, outward-looking, precise and sophisticated style” and will now be among the prestigious list of past winners of the award, which recently included Glen Murcutt, Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, Raphael Moneo, David Chipperfieldand steven holl.

As part of the prize, the architects will receive an honorarium of 15 million yen (equivalent to approximately 105,000 US dollars) and receive a medal from Prince Hitachi of Japan at a special ceremony to be held on October 19 in Tokyo. You will find an overview of past award winners here.
