HICKORY – Sarah “Brea” Pennell, a student at Catawba Valley Community College, has been named the recipient of the Stephanie Lynn Gabriel Fellowship through the CVCC Foundation, Inc.

Pennell is currently enrolled in the CVCC Paramedic Program, and she also works full-time for the Caldwell County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and volunteers for the Gamewell Fire Department.

“My career goals are to become a paramedic and later to become a flight medic,” said Pennell. “At some point, I would also like to get firefighter certifications. I really enjoy working with EMS and going to school to get my EM diploma.

After graduating from high school, Pennell was undecided about his career aspirations, but quickly discovered a passion for EMS after riding with a family friend who works for Caldwell EMS.

“I’m so happy I chose to do this,” she said of her first EMS experience. “I rode in third person with him and his partner a few times over the course of a week or so. I really appreciated. The experience was unlike anything I have ever done.

Since this first-hand opportunity, Pennell has found the calling of her life, and now she is taking the courses at CVCC necessary to fulfill her passion.

“I love every part of my job – the good days, the bad days,” Pennell said. “I like to help people in any way I can, no matter the size of the task. “
