The Youth Day Committee is looking for volunteers to plan the event

The Winter Youth Day Committee is looking for community members to help plan the 2022 event.

Winters Youth Day was founded in 1933 to teach young people aspects of municipal government. It has since become a popular event held annually to celebrate youth with a parade down Main Street and activities at the city park.

The coronavirus pandemic has led the committee to make the decision to cancel the event in 2020 and 2021. Now the committee hopes Winter Youth Day will return on April 30, 2022. However, without more volunteers to help plan events the celebration of 2022 can sparkle.

Carol McMasters-Stone, treasurer of the Winters Youth Day committee, said they didn’t have enough volunteers to organize the event. Ideally, they have a few people to help plan the various activities, including the Main Street Parade, and official chairs to coordinate vendors and activities at the Duck Derby and City Park.

“If we don’t get enough help, we hope to at least have the parade, but maybe that’s all we can do,” McMasters-Stone said.

McMasters-Stone said they also need additional volunteers for the big events on April 29 and 30 to help with setup, cleanup and more.

The Winters Youth Day Committee currently meets once a month via Zoom. But in March, meetings will increase to twice a month, then weekly in April. McMasters-Stone said they are doing their best to schedule meetings to accommodate everyone volunteering and planning events.

In a letter to the community, McMasters-Stone said many of the current committee members have served for more than 10 years. She noted that longtime Youth Day volunteer Mike Sebastian tried to step down from the committee twice but is back this year in hopes of bringing the event back in person.

McMasters-Stone said they need new volunteers with new ideas to help keep the Winters Youth Day event going.

Community members who are interested in volunteering, have questions, or would like to attend monthly meetings should email [email protected] for more information.
