WCPS asks for volunteers to determine a dress code for students
Washington County Public Schools is looking for students, staff and parents to volunteer on a special student dress code task force, according to school documents.
The group will determine a dress code policy which they will then recommend to Superintendent Boyd Michael.
In November, the Washington County Board of Education passed changes to its dress code policy. The biggest change involves the superintendent forming a committee of parents, students, and staff, whose mission is to promote change within the school system.
The school system is looking for six students from various high schools around the county.
He is also looking for middle school and elementary school students.
The student representative on the school board will sit on the committee, along with six staff members. Staff members include two teachers and/or counsellors, two administrators and the general directors of primary and secondary education. The task force would also include six parents from various parts of Washington County.
Group members will meet virtually from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on March 9, March 23 and March 30.
Additional meetings may be scheduled.
Interested volunteers will be notified by February 23. The task force will provide written recommendations to the Superintendent no later than June 1.
Those interested in being part of the Student Dress Code Task Force should complete an online form by going to wcpsmd.com, searching for “Student Dress Code Task Force,” then clicking on the link at the bottom of the screen.
Applications will be collected until February 16.
The Board of Education first adopted a dress code policy in July 2003. It was revised in May 2013.
The purpose of a dress code policy is to set out expectations for how students should dress for school, the policy states.
“A student’s appearance, including dress and personal attire, must not disrupt the educational process, interfere with the maintenance of a positive teaching/learning climate, or compromise reasonable standards of health and security,” reads the new wording of the policy. “Students and/or their parents or legal guardians have the responsibility to choose their attire that does not interfere with any aspect of the educational process.”
Added language includes: Sensitivity and awareness of the impact and implications of one’s behavior, including choice of dress, is essential for success in the classroom and beyond.
The dress code policy states that WCPS has three primary responsibilities to students:
- To promote student academic success.
- Create and foster a school environment that is safe, secure and conducive to student learning.
- Promote and support positive community norms and values such as civility, respect for others, self-respect, citizenship, and other constructive character traits and behaviors.
“Without these norms, values, traits, and behaviors, a school’s climate would inevitably deteriorate, teaching and learning would be negatively impacted, and students would be deficient in the knowledge and skills that are essential for success in life. community life, regardless of skill they were academic,” the policy states.
The policy does not specify which specific items students can and cannot wear to school.
